To create this visual job aid, I used:

  • Canva

Context

Employees frequently encountered workplace obstacles such as missed deadlines, critical feedback, shifting priorities, and unexpected challenges.

 

However:

  • Responses to setbacks varied widely

  • Some employees viewed obstacles as failure rather than growth opportunities

  • Feedback was sometimes interpreted defensively

  • There was no consistent visual reminder reinforcing practices

 

Although growth mindset principles were discussed in meetings and PD sessions, there was no accessible, actionable performance support tool to reinforce the behaviors in real time.

Analysis

Through observation and informal feedback, several needs emerged:

  • Staff needed a simple framework for responding to challenges

  • Messaging needed to be clear, concise, and actionable

  • The tool needed to be visually engaging to encourage visibility and reuse

  • The design needed to reduce cognitive load while reinforcing key behaviors

 

Previous materials were text-heavy and theoretical. A more visual, behavior-focused job aid was needed.

Solution

I designed a visually engaging job aid titled “Steps to Building a Growth Mindset” to serve as an on-demand performance support tool.

Design Decisions Included:

  • Clear hierarchical flow using upward arrows to symbolize growth progression

  • Chunked content into four actionable steps:

    1. Embrace Challenges

    2. Learn from Feedback

    3. Persist Through Obstacles

    4. Celebrate Effort

  • Concise, behavior-oriented language

  • Supportive visual metaphors (growth stages, trophy, upward movement)

  • High contrast color blocks for visual clarity

  • Minimal text to reduce cognitive overload

The layout intentionally reinforces progression and forward movement, visually aligning with the concept of growth.

The job aid was distributed digitally and displayed in shared workspaces as a constant reinforcement tool.

Impact

Following implementation:

  • Employees reported increased awareness of how they respond to obstacles

  • Team discussions referenced the four-step framework during problem-solving conversations

  • Supervisors observed improved resilience language in meetings

  • Staff reported greater willingness to seek feedback and persist through challenges

Organizational Impact

The visual job aid transformed growth mindset from a theoretical concept into a practical, behavior-based framework.

 

By providing an accessible reminder during moments of challenge, the tool supported:

  • Increased resilience

  • More constructive responses to feedback

  • Improved persistence during high-pressure tasks
