Safe & Smooth Dismissal
Transportation Procedures for School Staff

eLearning - Passive Video

Tools Used:

To create this eLearning course, I used:

  • Vyond

Context

School staff members assigned to dismissal duty were responsible for safely managing three student groups: walkers, car riders, and bus riders. However, dismissal procedures varied year to year, resulting in:

  • Inconsistent supervision practices

  • Confusion regarding role responsibilities

  • Delays in student transitions

  • Increased safety concerns during high-traffic dismissal periods

Because procedures were communicated verbally or through brief meetings, staff interpreted expectations differently. This lack of standardized training led to inefficiencies and preventable confusion during one of the highest-risk times of the school day.

The performance gap was clear: Staff needed consistent, scenario-based guidance to ensure safe and efficient dismissal procedures.

Analysis

To better understand the issue, I conducted informal observations and gathered feedback from staff members assigned to dismissal duty.

Key Findings:

  • Staff were unclear about designated supervision zones

  • Procedures for walkers, car riders, and bus riders were not explicitly differentiated

  • New staff members relied heavily on peer explanations

  • There was no reusable training resource for annual onboarding

The root cause was not lack of effort, but rather the absence of a standardized and accessible training solution.

A scalable, visual training tool was needed to clearly demonstrate expectations and procedures.

Solution

I designed and developed an animated training video using Vyond to provide clear, scenario-based instruction for dismissal duty procedures.

Instructional Design Strategies Included:

  • Visual walkthroughs of dismissal zones

  • Scenario-based examples for walkers, car riders, and bus riders

  • Step-by-step procedural demonstrations

  • Clear role clarification for staff members

  • Consistent terminology and expectations

  • Engaging animated storytelling to increase attention and retention

The animated format allowed staff to visually see procedures in action rather than relying solely on verbal explanation. The video was designed to be reusable for annual onboarding and accessible for new hires throughout the year.

The goal was to reduce ambiguity and improve consistency through visual, applied learning.

Impact

After implementation:

  • Staff reported greater clarity in their assigned dismissal roles

  • Confusion during dismissal procedures decreased

  • Transitions became more efficient and organized

  • Leadership observed improved consistency in supervision practices

  • The video became a reusable onboarding tool for future staff

The training improved both procedural understanding and real-world application, contributing to safer and more structured dismissal operations.

Organizational Impact

By transforming verbal instructions into a standardized, scenario-based visual training, the project improved operational efficiency, increased staff confidence, and strengthened student safety during dismissal.
